Claude Fable 5.1: What Changed, Pricing and How to Use It
Understand Claude Fable 5.1's coding and knowledge-work improvements, lower cache costs, paid availability and a practical workflow for evaluating it.

The essentials
- Claude Fable 5.1 is generally available for difficult coding, research and long-running agent work.
- Anthropic lowered cache-read pricing and says typical token-billed workloads cost less than Fable 5.
- Fable 5.1 is a paid model; Claude's Free plan does not list access to its expanded model catalog.
On this page
Claude Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's generally available model for difficult coding, knowledge work and long-running agent tasks. It shares an underlying model with the restricted Mythos 5.1 release, but Fable is the version most users and developers can actually select.
Anthropic announced the model on September 1, 2026. It remains distinct from Claude Opus 5.5, which arrived later in the month with a different price and positioning.
What changed from Claude Fable 5?
Anthropic's Fable 5.1 announcement focuses on harder coding and knowledge-work tasks, longer problem-solving sessions, fewer false positives in safeguard systems and lower effective cost for token-billed workloads.
The company says Fable 5.1 can operate with different effort settings. It defaults to High effort in Claude Code and Medium in Claude.ai and Claude's work surfaces. More effort can help difficult tasks, but it can also consume more time and usage.
The practical upgrade is not “use maximum effort for everything.” It is the ability to reserve a stronger, longer-running workflow for tasks whose complexity justifies it.
Fable 5.1 versus Mythos 5.1
Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 as the same model with different safeguards. Fable is generally available. Mythos is limited to trusted-access programs for sensitive cybersecurity and life-sciences work.
| Model | Availability | Intended distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise and supported developer platforms | General coding and knowledge work with production safeguards |
| Claude Mythos 5.1 | Vetted access programs | Restricted work requiring a different safeguard arrangement |
Most readers should choose Fable. Mythos is not an upgrade toggle for ordinary accounts.
Pricing and availability
Anthropic's Fable model page lists Fable 5.1 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with cache reads at $0.25 per million tokens. Anthropic estimates that reduced cache-read pricing lowers typical token-billed workloads by 25% and some highly agentic workloads by more.
Those are vendor estimates. Your cost depends on context size, cache behavior, output length, tool calls and retries.
Fable 5.1 is listed for Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It is also available through the Claude API and supported cloud marketplaces. Anthropic's current plan comparison does not list the broader model selection on the Free tier, so there is no documented free Fable 5.1 route to promise.
How to use Fable 5.1 in Claude
If your plan includes the model, select Fable 5.1 from the model picker and give it a task that benefits from sustained analysis. Start with a bounded version of the work rather than an entire backlog.
For document analysis:
Read the attached proposal and contract. Create a table of every commitment in
the proposal that is absent, weaker or ambiguous in the contract. Cite the
relevant passage from each file. Do not give legal advice; list questions for
our reviewer.
For coding:
Map the request flow for this bug before editing. Reproduce it, identify the
root cause, propose the smallest complete fix, add a regression test and run
the relevant checks. Stop if the fix requires a schema migration.
These prompts establish evidence, a deliverable and a stop condition. They do not guarantee a correct result.
When Fable 5.1 belongs in Claude Code
Fable is designed for ambitious multi-file work, repository exploration and agent tasks that may run for a long time. In Claude Code, use it when the task requires deeper investigation than a fast model can reliably sustain.
Before starting:
- Work on a branch or isolated copy.
- State the permitted files and commands.
- Provide the test command and acceptance criteria.
- Ask for a plan before broad changes.
- Review the diff and rerun tests independently.
For small edits, a faster and cheaper model may be the better engineering choice. Capability is useful only when it improves the accepted outcome enough to justify the added usage.
How to evaluate the model without trusting marketing
Build a fixed set of five representative tasks. Include one easy task, two ordinary tasks, one difficult task and one missing-information case. Record whether the answer is correct, supported, complete and efficient to review.
If you compare Fable 5.1 with Opus 5.5 or GPT-6 Astra, keep the prompt and acceptance criteria fixed. Record the effort setting and product surface. Do not combine results from Claude.ai, an API harness and a coding agent as if they measured the model alone.

Who should use Claude Fable 5.1?
Fable 5.1 makes sense for paid Claude users who regularly handle difficult codebases, long research tasks or multi-stage professional work. It is less compelling when usage is light, the task is simple or Opus 5.5 is available at a better effective cost for the same outcome.

Common Questions & Practical Answers
Anthropic lists Fable 5.1 for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users and through paid API access. The current Free plan does not list the broader model selection available on Pro.
