How to Use Claude Docs: Draft, Revise and Export a Document

Claude Docs is a beta workspace for drafting and revising rich-text documents with Claude and other people. Instead of returning a long answer that you copy elsewhere, Claude creates an editable document, can comment on its choices and can revise selected sections as the brief changes.

Anthropic introduced the feature in September 2026. It is useful for proposals, reports, briefs and other documents that need several review passes. It does not remove the need to verify facts, preserve source material or manage versions carefully.

Who can use Claude Docs?

Anthropic's Claude Docs guide lists the beta for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It is on by default for Pro, Max and Team. Enterprise owners must enable it in Organization settings under Artifacts.

The feature is not currently available to organizations using customer-managed encryption keys, zero data retention or a HIPAA-ready configuration. Anthropic's pricing comparison also lists Claude Design, Slides and Docs as paid-plan features rather than Free features.

Before moving team work into the beta, confirm that the sharing, retention and compliance behavior fits your organization.

Create your first document

Open a Claude conversation and ask for a doc. A stronger request includes the audience, purpose, source material, length and review standard.

Create a two-page project brief for the engineering and support teams.

Use only the attached meeting notes and issue summary. Include the problem,
scope, out-of-scope items, acceptance criteria, risks and unanswered questions.
Ask me up to three clarifying questions before drafting. Add comments wherever
the source material does not support a definite statement.

Claude should create the document in the conversation. Read the structure before polishing sentences. If a required section is missing, correct the outline first so later edits do not have to undo the entire draft.

Revise with a controlled review loop

Treat Claude as a drafting partner and keep decisions explicit. A practical loop is:

1. Confirm the document's audience and purpose.
2. Correct unsupported facts and missing requirements.
3. Revise one section or concern at a time.
4. Ask Claude to explain material changes in comments.
5. Perform a final human review outside the conversational flow.

Useful revision prompts include:

Shorten the background to 150 words. Preserve every dated fact and source link.

Rewrite the risks as condition, impact and mitigation. Do not invent owners or deadlines.

Compare the acceptance criteria with the original issue. List gaps before editing the doc.

These instructions reduce broad rewrites that quietly change meaning.

Work with collaborators

Claude Docs supports collaboration inside the document. Decide who can edit before sharing it widely, and use comments to explain decisions that future readers need to understand.

Anthropic says Team and Enterprise docs cannot currently be shared outside the organization by link or email invitation. There is also no comment-only access level yet. Those limits make Docs more suitable for an internal drafting workflow than a universal client-review portal.

For important documents, keep the source files and an approved exported copy in your normal records system. The current beta does not provide version history, so it should not be the only place where material revisions are preserved.

Export the finished document

Anthropic lists four export destinations:

• Word (.docx)
• PDF
• Markdown
• Google Docs

Choose the format based on what happens next. Use Word or Google Docs when other people need a familiar editing environment, PDF for a fixed review copy and Markdown for documentation workflows.

Open the exported file before sending it. Check headings, tables, links, page breaks and special characters. Export success does not guarantee that every layout decision survives conversion.

Current limitations that matter

Claude Docs is still in beta. Anthropic currently lists these limitations:

Limitation	Practical consequence
No version history	Preserve approved milestones outside Claude Docs
No comment-only role	Reviewers may need a different sharing workflow
Charts do not update automatically	Refresh connected data and verify the chart before reuse
Limited mobile controls	Use desktop or web for creation, editing and sharing changes
Some enterprise configurations unsupported	Confirm availability before standardizing a team process

Activity inside a doc is also not yet recorded in the Compliance API, according to Anthropic's help article. Organizations that depend on that audit trail should wait or use a controlled alternative.

A useful first project

Start with a document you can verify in one sitting: a meeting brief, study guide or internal project proposal. Avoid legal agreements, medical records and other high-stakes material until your organization has reviewed the beta's data handling and controls.

Is Claude Docs worth using?

Claude Docs is useful when the work benefits from a continuous draft-and-comment loop inside Claude. It is less useful when version history, external client review, mobile editing or strict compliance logging is essential.
